Abnormal Love

I was in my car in one of those beautiful morning. The stereo was tuned in to Hot.FM. The deejays of the moment were taking a call which I assume was from an English teacher as they kept calling her 'teacher'. If I remember correctly (I was concentrating on my driving!), the caller have to guess the title of a song. At the end she got it right and the title is Bukan Cinta Biasa by Siti. Before letting the caller go, the female deejay asked her what would be the English translation of the title of the song. With full confidence, she answered 'Abnormal Love'. And I almost got into an accident laughing.

I know that in this day and time, abnormal love is THE buzzword but to translate Bukan Cinta Biasa to Abnormal Love is really a class of it's own. More so by a 'teacher'.

So there you go. Abnormal Love anyone?

Harry Potter went to war...price war

The latest Harry Potter book hit the shelf in Malaysia on the morning of 21st July 2007 at 7.01am. However, Lord Voldermort managed to cast a spell and got the bookstores and hypermarkets into war.

The official selling price for this latest addition to the Harry Potter collection during launch is RM109.90. However, the same book is selling for only RM69.90 at hypermarkets here in Malaysia. A price difference of RM40! Why do they do that?

Think about what the bookstores has to organize for the launch. Think about the props, the free gifts and the overtime that they need to pay for the early launch at 7.01am. Then they still need to make profit. Furthermore, the distributor is saying that at RM69.90, the book is selling at a loss. So the profit margin for the bookstores is even lower.

While I appreciate the lower price offered, it would have been better if it was not sold at that price on the first day. Perhaps after 1 month would be more appropriate. Let the people who really want it and want it immediately after launch pay for it at proper launch price. The book is not an essential item. Even cars are priced higher when newly launched and the discount will gradually be introduced.

By the way, the price war is also happening in the UK with Tesco and ASDA trying to beat each other. The lowest priced at the moment is from ASDA at GBP5.00 at ASDA. Lord Voldermort must be laughing hard in his grave.......opssss.

Manchester United, FAM and AFC

So far we know that FAM does not want to allow MU to play in KL on 27th July 2007. However, the long sighted PM want MU to come and play in Malaysia. So reluctantly, FAM allows MU to play. Then AFC came back to say that it does not want MU to play in KL on that date. Fifa also comes in. The event organiser for Asia Cup starts looking at the Malaysian Government signed guarantee that no other major game will be played during that time. Malaysian may have to pay compensation. So, at worse, Malaysian will have to pay to watch MU play, then have to compensate for the game, then have FAM hanged, then have the national team be unable to play at any international tournament. MU players could also be barred from playing.

Back to the MU game, who is the event organiser? Perhaps somebody big? Somebody with great influence? I have no idea. anybody knows? Please let me know.

My personal opinion, the risk to the future of Malaysian football is great. Why should we take the risk just for a one time pleasure and an insignificant tourism income to the country? Perhaps the event organiser can get millions of profit thus higher tax but at what risk?

I see this as Malaysia leadership lacked of foresight, future planning and strategic thinking. Malaysia think tank behid the leadership should not be a yes man either to the leadership or anybody else related to the leadership.

Then again maybe the mission is to kill off FAM and Malaysian Football and replace it with a reality TV type of football tournament without having to seek endorsement and event management from AFC.

I really have no idea and can only speculate.

Non-lawyers abusing Bar emblem

KUALA LUMPUR: Shocking! That was how the new Bar Council president S. Ambiga described the situation whereby non-lawyers are using Bar Council emblems on their cars either to show off or to pass off as real lawyers.

Ambiga said: “I have been informed that there are cases of people who are using our car emblem but are not members of the Bar.

“The council will check and investigate if there is an unauthorised car badge manufacturer making imitations of our badges.

“It is shocking to find out that our car badges are being used by those who are not in the profession.”

The Council is looking into ways to introduce security features to its brass emblem which is screwed onto the front car bumper.

The problem of bogus lawyers or non-lawyers using the Bar Council's emblem came to light when some lawyers complained that more and more cars on the road were spotted with the emblems.

Some lawyers said there were cases of non-lawyers being let off by police with only verbal warnings after being stopped for minor traffic offences.

For example, if the non-lawyer whose car has a Bar Council emblem is caught for speeding, he can simply tell the cop he is rushing to court for a case.

The Bar Council would be carrying out investigations into the abuse of the car emblems, Ambiga said.

“We are now looking into ways of limiting the issue of badges to only our members,” she said.

The immediate step taken is for Bar Council staff to ask for the buyer's registration number and check it against the Council's records before selling the emblems, which costs RM75 each.

On Friday, The Star checked whether the new policy had been implemented and sent a reporter to the Bar Council to buy an emblem.

The receptionist asked for his membership number and when he said he was not a lawyer but was buying for his company, he was told to get an authorisation letter from his firm.

Lawyer Richard Wee said he had seen cars of friends who are not lawyers using Bar Council stickers and emblems.

“When I asked one of them why he did that, he said, 'Good-ma, can avoid saman (summons)!' Once I was in a lawyer friend's car before and when we were stopped by a policeman, the cop saw the sticker and asked what we were doing and then just said, 'Okay, okay, go, go',” said Wee.

Wee added that it was very difficult to control the situation.

“The responsibility must also lie with lawyers. Do not just simply buy and pass the stickers and emblems to friends,” he said.

Another lawyer said, “I have seen people whom I know who are not lawyers having lawyer's and police stickers on their car windscreens.

“I don’t think you can buy directly from the Bar Council. Some lawyers just simply buy and give them to their friends who are abusing using these stickers and badges.”

So now it's out in the open. Some lawyers are concerned that their privilege to go above the traffic law can also be used by other people who are not lawyers. So tell me where I can get this emblems. I also want to avoid having to pay fine. More so when my earning is insignificant compared to most ordinary lawyers.

And......don't sue me. Even if you do, I have no money to pay. Perhaps we can settle it over a teh tarik?

Losing Friends and Colleagues

This month is not a very good month for me. The year of the Boar definitely does not start with good things. The most obvious is when my colleagues which I considered as friends started to leave the company, one by one. The admin manager left earlier in December. In January, the deputy project director called me in to tell me that he might be leaving as well. As March came, he left. Before him, one of the shareholder also packed up his bags and pull out his money.

However, a severe blow came in when someone in the department told me she is leaving as well. Then came another severe blow in a form of a phone call from another friend in the department. He said he will not be coming back from his holiday. He is now doing a freelance job for his old company. I almost want to hang up. Nevertheless, I accepted their decision. I have dealt with resignation before but the sheer number of friends and colleague leaving at the same time did touched me. I felt sad.

Reflecting back, we had a good time together in the department. In the same train of thoughts, I remembered how close we were as friends and colleagues. There are almost not a single dull moment. Then I realised that losing colleagues does not mean losing friends. We can still keep in touch. We can still chat. We can still meet up. Maybe not as often but true friends does not have to be colleagues.

So to all my friends who are leaving, do keep in touch.

Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish

"Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish" so said Steve Jobs of Apple Computer while closing his speech at the Commencement address at Stanford University on June 12 2005. A wise advice for most of us who are already satisfied with life. In the speech, he related the story of him and the company he founded. How he was kicked out of his own company and how he got back in. He also said that all the things that happened, however small it is, may have a bigger significance in the future. Its all just happened and it is up to us to use our faculty of reason to make sense of it. Maybe not immediately. Maybe not in a month.

The speech given by Steve Jobs talks about doing the thing we like to do. Steve is a college dropout but he never stopped learning. When he dropped out, he took that chance to learn something that he like to do. Maybe this is what we need. We need to do something that we like and love to do. Therefore we will do it well and excel in it. We should also continue learning. Schools and colleges are not the only place to learn.

From now on, I wish to try to learn something new and share it here.
